Your Website on Mobile: What Google Expects

If your site looks bad on a phone, you are not just losing visitors — you are losing Google rankings. Since the switch to mobile-first indexing, Google looks exclusively at the mobile version of your site when deciding how to rank it. Your desktop version can be flawless; if the mobile one is not, for Google it barely exists.

What mobile-first indexing actually means

Googlebot visits your site as a phone, not as a computer. Content that is hidden, trimmed or removed on mobile simply does not exist for Google. A common mistake: a theme that hides half the text or the tables on mobile "for readability" is literally deleting that content from the index.

A mobile checklist

• Responsive design — one site that adapts to the screen, not a separate m-dot version. Every modern WordPress theme does this, but verify on a real phone, not just a narrowed browser window.
• Readable text without zooming — minimum 16px body text. If visitors have to pinch-zoom, you have lost them.
• Tap targets big enough — buttons and links of at least 44x44 pixels, with spacing. Two tiny links side by side are frustration number one.
• No horizontal scrolling — wide tables and fixed widths break mobile layouts. Wrap tables in a scrollable container.
• Same content as desktop — do not hide text, headings or structured data on mobile.
• No intrusive popups — a full-screen popup on page load is something Google explicitly penalizes on mobile.
• Speed — mobile users are often on 4G with mid-range phones. Core Web Vitals are measured on mobile.

How to test

The best test is the simplest one: open your site on your own phone and try to do what a customer would do — find the phone number, send an inquiry, buy a product. Then check the mobile score in PageSpeed Insights (not the desktop one!) and look in Search Console for reported mobile usability issues. A realistic target: mobile PageSpeed above 70 and zero errors in Search Console.
