Country Domain or .com: Which to Choose

21/07/2026

The question seems trivial until you register the wrong domain and end up changing it three years later, losing rankings in the process. The extension is not just cosmetics — it affects visitor trust, where Google surfaces you, and how easily you expand beyond your borders.

What a country domain does for search

A country-code domain (ccTLD such as .rs, .de, .co.uk) sends Google an unambiguous signal: this site targets that country. It helps for searches from within it and works against you if you want to rank abroad. With a ccTLD you cannot change the target country in Search Console — it is locked to the extension.

For a business serving one country, that is an advantage rather than a limitation. A bakery in Belgrade has no use for German traffic.

What .com offers

.com is neutral — Google treats it as global and you choose a target country in Search Console if you want one. People remember it more easily because it is the default extension in most users'' heads. If someone types your name from memory, they are more likely to append .com than anything else.

A practical recommendation by business type

  • Local service business (hairdresser, dentist, garage, restaurant)country domain. Local trust and the geo signal are worth more than global reach you will never use.
  • A company that also serves clients abroad.com as primary, the country domain redirecting to it.
  • Software company, agency, SaaS.com, no debate.
  • Online store shipping domestically onlycountry domain, but register the .com so nobody else takes it.
  • Personal brand or portfolio → either; take whichever is free and sounds better.

Register both if you can

Two domains cost roughly €25–30 a year combined. That is cheap insurance. Use one as primary and set the other as a 301 redirect to it. What you must not do is run two identical sites on two addresses — Google treats that as duplicate content and you no longer control which one it shows.

New extensions: .shop, .online, .tech

Technically they work just as well and Google does not penalise them. The problem is psychological: older users do not read them as serious, and some spam filters score them more harshly because they are frequently abused. For a marketing project or a startup they can be a great choice; for a law firm, probably not.

Practical rules for choosing the name

  • Shorter is better — under 15 characters where possible
  • No hyphens or numbers; "company-london-2024.com" reads like a temporary fix
  • Test how it sounds spoken over the phone — if you have to spell it, it is the wrong name
  • Avoid words with common spelling variants (colour/color) or pick up both
  • Check the name is not a registered trademark before you buy

If you change domains later

It is possible, but it costs. You need 301 redirects from every old URL to its new counterpart, a change-of-address notice in Search Console, and three to six months for rankings to fully recover. Which is why half an hour of thought now saves months later.

Once you have chosen, domain and hosting can sit together. See what is included in our plans — the SSL certificate you need regardless of extension is free and configured automatically, as explained on our SEO hosting page.
