How to Choose a Domain Name You Will Not Regret

21/07/2026

Your domain is the one thing on a website that is genuinely painful to change later. Switch it and you lose part of your Google standing, printed material becomes obsolete, and customers get confused. Half an hour of thought now beats three years of regret.

Seven rules for a good domain

  • Keep it short. Ideally under 15 characters. Longer names are harder to remember and more often mistyped.
  • Make it sayable over the phone. The test: dictate it to someone without explaining. If they ask "is that with a hyphen?", the name fails.
  • No hyphens or numbers. "car-parts-24.com" reads like a temporary solution and is painful to dictate.
  • Avoid easily confused letters. Names mixing similar-sounding spellings guarantee lost visitors.
  • Tie it to your business or brand. Either descriptive (bristolplumbing) or brandable (novak.com). Random coinages need a marketing budget to stick.
  • Check it is not "burned". If the domain was previously used for spam, you inherit its bad reputation. Check archive.org before buying.
  • Check trademarks. A name close to a known brand is an invitation to a legal problem.

Country domain or .com?

If you serve mainly one country, the local extension is the better choice: Google reads it as a clear geographic signal, and local customers trust it more. If you also sell internationally, .com is universal. The practical answer most of our clients land on: register both and redirect one to the other. It costs a few euros more per year and keeps competitors away from your name.

Three mistakes people keep making

1. Registering it in someone else''s name. If your agency registers the domain under their account, it is not yours. Insist on being the registrant — verify it in WHOIS.

2. Forgetting to renew. The domain expires, the site vanishes, and sometimes a reseller grabs the name. Enable auto-renewal and keep a working email on the contact record.

3. Keyword-stuffed names. "best-cheap-hosting-uk.com" does not help rankings anymore and looks unserious. Google has judged content over domains for years.

Once you have chosen

Connect the domain to your hosting — DNS changes propagate within 1-4 hours. With us that is configured automatically, SSL issues itself, and email on your domain works immediately. See hosting and domain in one place if you would rather not juggle two providers.
